Chardon Law is owned and operated by Attorney Jonathan D. Plaut. Jonathan is a graduate of Tufts University and Boston College Law School. For over fifteen years, Jonathan has represented numerous corporations and individuals in a wide variety of civil and criminal litigation.
Jonathan is an active member of the Massachusetts Bar, the New York Bar, and the Bars of the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts, the Eastern District of New York and the Southern District of New York. Jonathan is also an active member of the Massachusetts Bar Association and the Business Litigation Committee of the Boston Bar Association.
In the past two years, Chardon Law has seen several million dollar verdicts in plaintiffs' cases, and several important defense verdicts in cases where its clients were defendants. In 2012, Jonathan brought six cases though jury trial or final arbitration. In 2011, Jonathan, along with veteran trial lawyer Robert Cohan (of Cohan Rasnick Myerson LLP) brought a suit against the Bank of Rhode Island on behalf of a family-owned Rhode Island business. After a five week jury trial in March, 2011 they prevailed against the bank on claims of breach of contract and negligence, and won a seven-figure verdict on behalf of their client. In another case, Jonathan brought a claim for abuse of process and deceptive business practices against a real estate developer in Boston which, like the BankRI case, resulted in another seven figure verdict in favor of his client.
Jonathan has represented numerous clients in jury trials, bench trials, arbitrations and regulatory hearings before numerous state district courts, state superior courts, and federal district courts. He appears before state and federal appeals courts and actions before the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts. Jonathan has also been admitted pro hac vice in several additional jurisdictions including Rhode Island and New Hampshire. Jonathan represents clients before various administrative, regulatory and professional tribunals. Jonathan also serves as secretary for certain client corporations.
Jonathan formerly served the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as an Assistant District Attorney for Norfolk County wherein he prosecuted hundreds of criminal cases of financial crimes, narcotic drugs, civil rights hate crimes and domestic violence. Jonathan is quoted occasionally in Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly on attorney malpractice and ethics cases.
Jonathan speaks and writes Japanese, and he has represented numerous Japanese citizens and businesses in a variety of matters including corporation formation, civil lawsuits, criminal defense and governmental investigations. He served as a foreign legal associate at the firm of Anderson Mori in Tokyo, Japan where he represented numerous multinational corporations.
Jonathan has taught courses in criminal law and environmental law at Tufts University and Boston College. Jonathan has also taught spoken and written Japanese at several secondary schools including Choate Rosemary Hall and the Kent School.
When he is not practicing law, Jonathan plays bass guitar and is the lead singer for the hard rock band, The Learned Hands. Jonathan recently played rhythm guitar at the BB King Blues Club in Manhattan backing up Carmine and Vinnie Appice (of Black Sabbath, Ozzy, Rod Stewart and Jeff Beck fame), and played viola for the great troubadour rocker Michelle Shocked during seven of her shows in New York, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Maine and Massachusetts. He has played at various rock venues throughout the Northeast.
